Look, honestly, I understand losing against the 49ers. They are a formidable opponent who went 14-2 last year and were probably two turnovers away from a Super Bowl appearance. If we got a couple touchdowns and kept it close, I could have accepted that. But that doesn't explain what happened today. Our offense just could not get going at any point. No points and 4 turnovers can't all be blamed on the other team's defense. While coming into this game without two of our three top receivers (Dustin Keller and Stephen Hill), it was still no excuse for not scoring any points. And, as one of the announcers put it, "to add injury to insult", Holmes hurt his knee and was out for the rest of the game.
And yet it was a totally different game for the Jets defense. I really don't have anything bad to say about them. They played well with a couple sacks and a few great stops. A week ago, when I found out Darrelle Revis will be out for the rest of the season, I was afraid what would happen to our defense. However, their play in this game made me feel quite optimistic.
But with continual 3-and-outs by our offense, eventually something's gotta give. Such a disproportionate amount of field time understandably wore down our defense, eventually allowing for big plays. In any case, something major needs to be done. Hopefully our top three receivers will come back for the next game, and just that was our problem. (Week 1 featured all three, and we dominated.) Next week we face the undefeated Texans, so I'm a little scared. But the season is still young and we're still tied at the top of the AFC East. Let's try to stay there.
