I thought I'd start off though with a little introduction. I think I've always had at least an interest in football, more so than other sports. In middle school, I decided to be like every other American and start watching the Super Bowl. As the years went on, I started to really enjoy watching the game. A couple of years ago, my girlfriend's family took me to a Jets game. It was against the Dolphins during the 2009 season, the first of which with Rex Ryan as head coach and Mark Sanchez as quarterback. Even with drunk people shouting things that in no way, shape, or form can be printed here, I still enjoyed the experience. I went again for a game the following year, and from then on I guess you could say I became a Jets fan. I watched bits and pieces of the rest of the season, seeing the clutch Sanchez rack-up wins and propel the team into the playoffs. By the time we beat Peyton Manning's Colts and Tom Brady's Patriots back-to-back to move on to the AFC Championship game, I was committed in holy fan matrimony.
Now, onto last Sunday's game/annihilation. In what was apparently an attempt by Rex to silence all critics, the Jets scored in every way imaginable. Touchdown passes, running touchdowns, punt-return for a touchdown, pick-six: everyone shared the wealth in this solid win over Buffalo.
Everyone was on their A game. Sanchez's arm was much better than last year, and with an offensive line that actually gave him more than 2 milliseconds to go through his reads, he completed some incredible passes. Side-note: Although many of his fans turned on him last year, I've always stood by Mark Sanchez. His thrilling, fourth-quarter, come-from-behind wins are most of what made me a Jets fan. I never blamed him for any of our losses last year; how can a quarterback play well with no protection? It's kind of hard to go through your reads when you have no pocket and are getting sacked on every other play.
That being said, due to some smart trades and the return of Ryan's hands-on approach, I saw a solid offensive line this Sunday. In fact, I don't remember there being any sacks on the day. Rookie Wide Receiver Stephen Hill had a sweet first NFL game that he'll probably never forget, catching two touchdown passes, one over his shoulder in the end zone and the other held over the orange pylon. Jeremy Kerley caught one in the back of the end zone, and Santonio Holmes also got some deep passes. Shonn Greene ran one in too, in addition to an already impressive rushing yards for the day.
The defense played to their potential, holding the Bills offense as long as they needed to and picking off Fitzpatrick three times. They did allow two too many touchdowns, but in a 48 point win it wasn't much of a concern. I will say though that this defense needs to stay tight throughout the game no matter what, because the game isn't over until the clock runs out.
The only dark spot on the day was Darrelle Revis getting a head injury, of which the Jets staff is now saying is a minor concussion. Hopefully he should be ready for the Steelers this Sunday, but safety first. All right Jets, lets keep up the good work this season and stay consistent. 'Till next week!
