Well, once again, we lost, bringing our record to an atrocious 3-5. Bear with me here, because this is the first loss I'm angry about this year. But seriously, this is terrible heading into the bye week. And it wasn't just a loss to a crappy team, it was worse than that: a loss to the Dolphins. It wasn't even the Ryan Tannehill offense either; he was injured from a clean sack early in the first quarter. It was Matt Moore, keeping the tempo on his team's side.
Look, if we fought it out like we did against the Patriots, I'd be disappointed but not angry. But as a fan, it's pretty hard not to be. Because what I saw was a serious lack of effort. The Jets once again got overconfident and made mistakes. The bad offense reared its ugly head again, sputtering most of the game and only managing one field goal and one touchdown.
But the biggest surprise was with special teams. Our special teams units are normally phenomenal under coordinator Mike Westhoff, but not yesterday. They apparently forgot they actually have to try on these plays. Examples: Nick Folk's field goal attempt, our first chance to score points in the game in the second quarter, was blocked (pictured). A simple punt was blocked and returned for a touchdown, the first time that's happened to us since the eighties. And let's not even talk about the lack of defense on punt returns that usually let the Dolphins start their drives around midfield.
It seems as though every time we fix a problem, a new one shows up. The biggest problem plaguing the Jets this game was a lack of commitment. It showed up in special teams, but in another way as well. What I saw yesterday was something I've never seen before in any football game I've ever witnessed: I saw a team give up after the first quarter.
